THE HOLY BIBLE HOME
Faster,
the first single from the new album was released in May 1994. It charted
at number 16. Media interest was good but unfortunately they found that the focus
had turned to Richey's personal life. In August of that year he was admitted to a psychiatric
clinic suffering from what official sources said 'nervous exhaustion'. From there he moved to the Priory,
in London, and began a 12 step recovery programme. While he was in there he
still contributed to the artwork for
the band's new releases, and continued to write large quantities of lyrics.
On August 30th 1994, the band released their third album,
'The
Holy Bible'. It is a dark, raw sometimes disturbing album that again is very
different in sound and context to the previous two. Exploring
more darker avenues of their songwriting. It dealt with sex, death camps,
American gun law, anorexia and relationships. Lyrical it was too very dark with
Richey writing about three quarters of the material.
Two further singles, 'Revol'
and 'She Is
Suffering', were released but once again much of the press continued to focus on the
health of Richey.
Richey returned.
And the band once again began touring in Europe as well as traveling to Banqok
which became a disaster in terms of Richey's well being. They returned to
England to play a set of fantastic shows at the London Astoria
in December, which ended with all four Manics spectacularly trashing £10,000
worth of equipment. Nicky later commented, "We'll never be that good again."
On 23rd
January1995, Richey was interviewed by a Japanese magazine. It
was to be his last known interview with any press. Nine days later on the 1st February
Richey left a London hotel where he and James had been staying in order to fly
to America. He left in his car and drove to Cardiff, apparently to his flat. His car was
eventually found at the Austel Service Station, near the Severn bridge. There
has been no confirmed sightings of Richey since, but the investigation is still
open but inactive. Everyone involved has give their best efforts but the
disappearance remains a mystery.
James,
Nicky and Sean were distraught. Their friend was missing and with no idea
of his fate. This was a incredibly painful and confusing time in their lives.
Media attention was also strong constantly asking and probing about what they
will do. The three members didn't know themselves what to do. They
were not sure if the Manic Street Preachers would continue.
