GENERATION TERRORISTS
On
May 21st 1991, the Manic Street Preachers signed their contract to Sony Records.
This deal would secure their funds to produce their debut album. They launched
the deal with their debut single on Sony with 'Stay Beautiful', which reached
number 40 in the charts. They followed this up with 'Love's Sweet Exile' and a
more powerful, re-invented version of 'You Love Us'.
Then in February 1992 the band
released their debut album, GENERATION TERRORISTS. It is an angry, politically
driven album with raw ideas. They didn't want it to be just another release,
they wanted it to be a event.
The album received mixed reviews in
the press, something the Manics would suffer all their career, but the band had
become used to these critical responses and really didn't care. It's part of the
industry there are in and had to accept this.
The band were on fire with
album sales rising and three top forty hits already under their belt. They
released 'Slash N Burn' which entered at number 20. They went to America shortly
afterwards, not long after the Los Angeles riots and released the albums gem,
'Motorcycle Emptiness'. A six minute epic of emotional guitar riffs and solos,
simply fantastic.
Generation Terrorists final single was 'Little Baby Nothing', with guest vocals by ex porn star, Traci Lords. Again the press kept their eye on the bands movement, still not convinced of their conviction. The Manics didn't care, the album was a success and they had put across their brand of music to a wider audience. It went in at number 13 and went on to sell 250,000 world wide.
Leaving critics and journalists in their wake, the band moved onto the next phase of their career.
