GOLD AGAINST THE SOUL HOME
June
1993 saw the release of their second album, Gold Against The Soul. Produced
by Dave Eringa, it has a very different sound compared to Generation Terrorists,
with a more polished anthemic sound. It was also much more concise and shorter
than their debut. The
first single was From'
Despair To Where'. which gave the band a top 20 hit. They toured the
following month and released the album's second single, 'La Tristessa Durera'.
Following
an upset with the press, with Nicky attacking the upper class, the band played a
support slot with rocker Bon Jovi and shortly afterwards released the single
'Roses In The Hospital'. Asked what the song was about, Richey replied,
'Its about something beautiful left to rot and decay'.
The
7th December 1993 was a sad day for the Manics. Their manager and good friend,
Phillip Hall, lost his two year battle against cancer. The band were devastated.
The band were due to play a gig in Brixton but out of respect they cancelled.
However, March following they played a benefit concert for Cancer Research
January
'94 saw the release of the final single from the 'Gold Against The Soul'
album. It was 'Life
Becoming A Landslide'. The band had been touring extensively and the
death of their friend had taken its toll. 1993 should have been THEIR year but
they felt it never really took off. They realised another turning
point in their career had been reached and so the Manics set about deciding on
the direction of the next album.
