THIS IS MY TRUTH TELL ME YOURS HOME
The 'Everything Must Go' album had been the Manics most successfully yet. They were now a 'popular' band appealing to the masses and achieving the status they wanted. They commenced recording of their fifth album in late 1997 and by mid 1998 they released 'This Is My truth Tell Me Yours'. It is no ordinary album. It gives a new sound to the Manics incorpating non rock instruments. It went straight in at number one and held the spot convincingly. The first single of the album was 'If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next'. It dealt with fascism at the time of the Spanish civil war. This too went in at number one.
The Manics were now one of the biggest bands in the U.K and winter of 1998 went about proving it by going on a massive arena tour and playing two European tours, a massive feat in itself. During this time the album produced three more singles. 'You Stole The Sun From My Heart' and 'Tsunami' went top ten while, 'The Everlasting' went to number 11. The album went on to receive fantastic press reviews and critical acclaim. However, now that the band look back they agree it is not their favorite and the majority of fans agree with this. But it was popular with the general public through its radio friendly songs.
The 1999 Brit Awards saw the band
again presented with two awards – Best Band and
Best Album. They also received numerous awards from the press and rave reviews.
The summer of '99 also saw the Manics headline three major UK festivals
– Glastonbury, T In The Park and V99. Again another feat, especially for
the Manics, who claimed they were not a festival band.
New Years Eve 1999, was a fitting night for the Manic Street Preachers. The band played a sell-out concert to 60,000 fans at the Cardiff Millennium Stadium. It was an amazing venue and event, and fine way for the band of the 90s who had been through it all to leave the 20th Century.
The Manic Street Preachers had achieved so much by the year 2000. What lay in store for them in the new century was to be seen.
